BUILDING A NEW CREATIVE PORTFOLIO WEBSITE

Last month, I decided that my portfolio website needed a refresh. I had pieced the original site together with images and if you know anything about web design, this is a big no-no. It might look great, but if your site is only made of images, search engines don’t read any of the text on your page. Your website will be impossible to find. What’s the point of a website if no one will see it?

Also, since the site was built for desktop, it was not responsive. Also a big no-no. Today, a high percentage of people are browsing on their tablets or mobile devices and not even going near a computer. No one is going to waste time and effort trying to zoom and pan around their tiny screens to view your website.

This left me in quite a conundrum. I am not a web developer, nor did I want to invest in an expensive, custom coded website.

With my design background, I’m fairly comfortable with HTML coding. I couldn’t build one from scratch, but I could work around with an existing template to make it my own. So that is exactly what I did. A Google search for Free Responsive Web Templates brought me to a nice library of templates I could re-work for my own purposes.

After you’ve selected a template that you feel would best suit your needs, you can download all the files and elements. I used Dreamweaver CC to work through the personalization. It was a bit of a learn-as-I-go process, but I’m so happy that I put myself through the sort of “forced education”. For those of you that are curious, I use a great, reasonable hosting site called A Small Orange.

Now my site has been sky-rocketed into the 21st century. It’s fully optimized for search and mobile-friendly. I’d say that’s a mission accomplished.

FREE Printable Hand-Drawn Holiday Gift Tags

2014 Holiday Gift Tags
Standard

With all the illustrations I’ve been doing lately, I’m finding myself wanting to hand-drawn everything. Admittedly, I’ve spent entirely too much time “illustrating” my grocery list. Anyway, as I was finishing up my Christmas wrapping the other day, the thought occurred to me that this was the perfect opportunity to illustrate something that might be of some use to someone, besides myself at the grocery store. I hope you enjoy these hand-drawn gift tags that you can print from home! Happy Holidays!
